Which lamp fits which venue

We keep the cordless range deliberately small. Two designs, each with a clear job.

The Portable Metal Touch (polished aluminium or brassy gold) is the workhorse. It stands 21.5cm tall, dims by touch, and lets you shift the colour of the light from a warm glow to a cooler white, so the same lamp reads at brunch and reads again at 9pm. On its lowest setting it holds up to around 36 hours per charge; at full brightness roughly a full evening of service. Best for dining tables, bar tops, private rooms and any table where staff want a real dial on brightness through the shift.

The Timber Mushie (beech or walnut, Small at 9cm wide or Regular at 10cm) is the mood piece. Solid timber, capacitive touch dim, warm and close to candlelight. Runs for hours per charge. Better in a bar bench, a two-top, a quiet corner or a hotel-room bedside than in the middle of a big working dining table.

Both lamps are built for indoor and sheltered outdoor use, so a covered terrace at dinner is fine. Bring them back inside overnight and keep them dry rather than leaving them out.

BATTERY

How the batteries work, and why gentle charging matters

Both lamps carry a small lithium-ion battery, the same chemistry as a phone. The Portable Metal Touch runs a 3600mAh cell; the Timber Mushie runs its own internal cell. The two things that shorten a lithium battery's working life are heat and being held at 100% charge for long stretches. Charging speed matters much less than most operators think. It is the temperature at the cell that does the damage, not the amps at the port.

The practical translation for a restaurant. Buy a multi-port USB charger where each port sits in the 1 to 2 amp zone once every lamp is plugged in, run it on an open shelf with airflow instead of a closed cupboard, and unplug the lamps a while after they hit full rather than leaving them tethered for days between services. Battery-University guidance treats anything under about 1C of charging current (that is, less than the battery's own capacity in amps) as the gentle zone, so a 2-amp port shared across several lamps easily lands there. Slow and cool beats fast and hot, every time.

The charging station shelf setup

The simplest hospitality setup is one open shelf, one power lead per hub, and one or two multi-port USB chargers acting as a shared charging station for the whole fleet. Cables run from the hubs to each lamp; lamps sit in their crates or on a soft-lined tray next to the hubs overnight. Staff pull the ready lamps out for setup, drop the used ones back at the end of service.

A few things matter more than they sound.

Airflow first. A shelf in a stock room or dry storage with a bit of clearance around each hub. Not inside a closed drawer, not stacked with tea-towels on top, not on top of a hot fridge.
One switched outlet per hub. Turn the shelf off between services if you like; the batteries hold their charge for weeks with no top-up.
Label every cable. Sticky tape and a marker on each cable near the plug end. The person on close should not have to guess which lamp goes where.
One spare per ten in service. Portable lamps do get dropped in a busy kitchen. Buying eleven for a ten-table venue gives you a rotation buffer for the odd cell that ages faster or the odd cable that gets stood on.

A note on the reviews. The Belkin is our top pick because it is the pure-USB-A hub Australian retailers actually stock, priced right for stacking, and easy to replace in-store on short notice. If you land on Trustpilot and see a 1.2 star average against Belkin as a company, read the reviews before it puts you off: most are warranty complaints against Belkin's global support, not against this line of chargers. Cygnett carries the best-reviewed brand rating of the five (4.9 across 161 Trustpilot AU reviews); worth a look if you want mixed USB-A + USB-C ports in one unit. The UGREEN Nexode is overkill for 4 to 10 lamps but earns its keep past twenty, when the port density and GaN heat performance start to matter.

For a small venue, one four-port hub is all you need. For a bigger venue, stack more four-ports on the same shelf. Simpler than one giant charger, and one dead unit does not take the whole shelf offline.

The adaptor and dongle question

Can you plug a USB-A cable into a USB-C hub with a small dongle? In principle, yes. In practice, do not.

Cheap USB-C to USB-A adaptors do not always handshake with the hub's power negotiation, they get lost in a busy kitchen, and they add another point of failure at the exact junction that is already the most fragile part of any charging setup. The price per port comes out about the same as buying a proper USB-A hub. Not worth the fiddle.

The one clean exception. If a venue only runs Portable Metal Touch lamps (no Timber Mushies at all), swap the shipped USB-A to USB-C cables for standard USB-C to USB-C cables and plug straight into a good USB-C hub. That works because the Metal Touch has a USB-C port on the lamp itself. For any Timber Mushie fleet, or any mixed use, stay on USB-A.

CARE

Daily, weekly and long-term battery care

Daily. Wipe the lamps down with a soft dry cloth as part of turndown. Drop them on the shelf. If a lamp is not going straight back into service tomorrow, run it down to about half before storing rather than leaving it on charge overnight for no reason.

Weekly. Check every cable for wear at the plug ends. USB cables are the first thing to fail in a busy setup, especially where a plug gets stood on. Keep two or three spares in the drawer.

Every year or two. Lithium batteries lose capacity gradually. If a lamp is only holding half its original run-time (say six hours instead of the twelve you started with on the Metal Touch), that is a battery near end of life. We do not run a formal replacement service, but get in touch and we will point you at the options. Our 12-month warranty covers the lamps themselves.

How long do battery operated table lamps last?

Between charges, hours to a couple of days depending on the lamp and how bright you run it. The Portable Metal Touch holds up to around 36 hours per charge on its lowest setting, roughly a full evening of service at full brightness. The Timber Mushie runs for hours per charge, with an overnight top-up keeping it ready for the next evening. As a lifetime figure, expect years of daily service before the run-time drops noticeably.

Are battery operated lamps safe?

For hospitality use, yes, as long as you treat them the way any commercial lithium-battery kit should be treated. Charge on an open shelf with airflow, not sealed in a cupboard. Use the supplied USB cable with a good-quality USB-A charger from a mainstream Australian retailer, not an unbranded plug-pack. Both lamps have integrated LEDs that run cool, so there is no hot globe and no flame at the table.
