A rice paper lamp glowing warmlyBold Lighting and Unique Homewares

There's a moment about ten seconds after you switch one on where you stop looking at the lamp and start looking at the room. The whole shade lights at once, soft and even, and nothing behind it goes sharp. That hotspot-free wash is the whole reason to choose washi over glass or metal.

For most Australian homes the best of them is the Above the Clouds Lamp (around $240), a stacked, cloud-like form that fills a corner with soft light and still earns its place as an object in daylight. If you want the room to stop and look, size up to Bigger Is Better (around $400, 120cm tall) and let it glow from every side. Boxy (around $250) is the only square shade in the range. For a bedside or a smaller room, Absolutely Necessary (around $135) is the everyday pick, and the one people come back for a second time.

One thing worth knowing: paper throws light in every direction rather than aiming it, which is exactly what you want to sit inside, and not what you want over a desk or a dining table. Every shade here is washi over a metal frame, finished by hand so no two are identical, and every one arrives with a warm 2200K globe already fitted.

THE SHORTLIST

Above the Clouds Lamp - best soft sculptural floor lamp

around $240 | rice paper floor lamp | 40cm W x 60cm H Two rounded forms stacked into one soft cloud of a lamp, on four slim wire legs. Both sections light up together, so there is no bright spot anywhere to catch your eye and the corner simply goes warm. Stand it beside a chair and the reading light and the room light become the same light. In daylight it reads as a shape somebody chose, which is the part most floor lamps fail. The one people ask about.

Bigger Is Better Lamp - best statement scale

around $400 | rice paper floor lamp | 53cm W x 120cm H A balloon-oval lantern standing 120cm on a minimal black wire tripod with a brass ring collar. It needs no surface, which is the whole point: it goes in the corner a side table cannot reach and lifts the entire end of the room. Presence without weight, and the only piece in the range that changes a room's proportions rather than just its light.

Boxy Lamp - best contemporary square

around $250 | rice paper floor lamp | 42cm W x 60cm H Four flat washi panels and a small metal ring collar, the only straight-edged shade in a range of curves. The glow is the same even, hotspot-free warmth as the rest of the family, but the line is architectural, so it holds its own next to a bookshelf or a doorframe instead of softening into the room. The quiet rule-breaker, and the one that gets a second look in a pared-back space.

Absolutely Necessary Lamp - best value, best for smaller spaces

around $135 | rice paper table lamp | 28cm W x 47cm H A single teardrop of handcrafted rice paper on a slim wire tripod, and the only one in the family built for a table rather than the floor. At arm's length there is no glare from any angle, which is the only test a bedside lamp really has to pass. Small enough for a side table already holding a book, a glass of water and something charging. Buy one, then find yourself buying another for the spare room.

Western paper turns away the light, while our paper seems to take it in, to envelop it gently, like the soft surface of a first snowfall.

Frequently asked questions

What is a rice paper lamp, and is it the same as a paper lantern?

A rice paper lamp is a lamp with a washi paper shade that glows evenly when lit, and it is essentially the same thing as a paper lantern. "Paper lantern" leans on the traditional Japanese chochin heritage and often describes round or hanging shapes, while "rice paper lamp" points to the washi material. Both spread a soft, all-over warm glow rather than a directed beam. Ours are all freestanding table and floor lamps; we do not make hanging or ceiling versions.

Are these Japanese? What is the Akari and Noguchi connection?

The form comes from the Japanese chochin lantern tradition, where washi paper was layered over a light frame and lit from within. Gifu has made lanterns this way since at least the 17th century, and in 1951 the sculptor Isamu Noguchi stopped there, saw the lantern-lit fishing boats on the Nagara River, and reworked the craft into his Akari series with the Gifu firm Ozeki. That is the lineage our shades sit in. They are made in that tradition and are not Akari, not Noguchi designs, and not connected to his estate.

What bulb suits a rice paper lamp?

An ultra-warm 2200K globe suits a rice paper lamp best, keeping the light close to candlelight as it passes through the washi. Each of our rice paper lamps ships with a matched 2200K G45 globe already fitted. Choose a low-heat LED to look after the paper over time, and skip anything cooler, which strips the warmth the paper is so good at carrying.

How do you care for a paper lamp?

Dust the shade gently with a dry, soft brush or a feather duster, and keep it away from steam and damp, since moisture marks washi. Handle the shade by its frame rather than pressing on the paper. Treated gently, washi takes on a soft patina and ages with character rather than looking worn, which is a large part of why people keep these for years.

Floor or table - which size should I go for?

Choose a floor lamp to anchor a corner or a reading chair with all-over light (Above the Clouds, Boxy, or the 120cm Bigger Is Better), and the smaller Absolutely Necessary table lamp for a bedside, a hallway console or a shelf where the glow should stay close. Size up if the lamp is lifting a dark corner on its own; size down if it is sharing a surface with books and a glass of water. For a desk or a study, look at a directional lamp instead: rice paper diffuses in every direction and will not put light where you need it for close work.

Can a rice paper lamp light a whole room?

Yes. A larger rice paper floor lamp will carry a whole living room or bedroom, because the washi shade pushes light outward in every direction instead of down in a beam. Stand Bigger Is Better or Above the Clouds in a corner and it lifts the space with an even, warm glow and no glare, which is exactly the job a single ceiling light does badly.
